His mother is Croatian, he tells her on the drive up, but his father is American. He grew up in Connecticut. But his Croatian is poor. But he still goes back every summer. And he’s going back in two week, and it’s gorgeous. She feels a kinship with him, because she's also half-American.

I miss you already, he says, stroking her hair while concentrating on the road.
