The marketing is never the product. For great art, that's a virtue. And for bad art, it’s what it hopes you'll never notice. I believe the goal, in the long run, is to separate the authentic from the fabricated—the real from the ginned up.
From a recent conversation with a friend. “Nietzsche is homeopathic medicine; you should never dose too highly with Nietzche.”
