I like the transition from writing to directing, where I can treat my own work objectively and start to talk about it as if it were written by someone else. This is the moment of forgetting when the subconscious closes its gates and the siege of the self by the self begins.
I think of Kafka's trope, the artist as a mole, who creates his own underground city or labyrinth. In German, the word for burrow, 'Bau,' implies both an upward movement and a downward activity. The labyrinth is also a ladder.
