A hunch: that the more the phone becomes an extension of the body, the more even moderate physical discomfort or pain becomes unacceptable, because the body will want to feel more like the phone: painless, battery powered. Screens, anti depressants, air conditioning as a universal right—it’s hard not speculate what younger people will demand from adult life; it’s not hard to predict what will overwhelm them. Some degree of pain is interesting—some degree of discomfort is synonymous with the very processes of life itself. But if you’ve become… like the phone that’s threaded into your nervous system, you can only turn on and off. If you’re feeling tired—get plugged in for the night.
Europe died in 1914. America in 2001. Civilizations live on long after the engine or spirit disappear. Maybe we are all zombies because we live in a zombie infrastructure, a zombie polis. Just a thought.
