“The distracted person, too, can form habits,” Benjamin writes. “The ability to master certain tasks in a state of distraction proves their solution has become a matter of habit." Distraction is an “art” which demonstrates “a covert control” enabled by the new technologies of distraction themselves. Distraction, I suspect Benjamin is saying, is actually only an approximate word for a consciousness which receives too many electronic sensory inputs at once.
