We don't die in the same worlds we're born into. Even with that war and revolution, it's possible for your civilization to be transformed radically over the course of your lifetime, maybe several times. I've been thinking about how—despite continuity in institutions, continuity of language (we still speak English) and continuity of many social roles and behaviors (we still scream at sports games; there are still firemen if there's a fire at your house; the police will arrest you for disorderly conduct; you go to the doctor when you're sick)—the world of today, the post-iPhone world, bears little resemblance to the world of even 2000, and almost no resemblance to 1980, before the internet.
