Most of the time, I don't know what the information I'm taking in is for; I have more information than I need, much more. I think that's one recent conscious realization. I'm addicted to acquiring information that very rarely helps me accomplish my daily or long-term goals, my practical or existential goals. Information simply has become entertainment. There's no difference between useful knowledge and entertainment. The medium produces messages to keep you on the medium. I don't need to know as much about the NBA as I do. Twitter started feeding me more tweets about the Premier League, so now I find the Premier League interesting. Conspiracy theories, pop science, nutrition. I read more about supplements every day than I have any reason to, and consequently I buy more supplements. I might be healthier than I was, but who knows. I'd be curious to know how many people I will meet today have read a single book this week, or this month. I would love to know what the relative Instagram scroll time is versus the time spent reading a book for most of the people I meet. Now that would be useful information.
